The Leaf-Chronicle ON THE RECORD www.theleafchronicle.com Monday, December 5, 2005 Page B2 CRIME WATCH Oakwood. Heights! VMTCSVIlie i 1 A. ZIIp, Sanfl0', The Leaf-Chronicle CRIME BRIEFS Fire prevention tips City Fire Marshal Ray Williams offers these tips to prevent fires: Install smoke detectors on every floor and in every sleeping area Smoke detectors reduce the risk of dying in a fire by about 50 percent. Smoke inhalation kills more people than burns do. Install a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and in any area where fires might start.

Type A-B-C models with a UL listing are best Ensure portable heaters are at least three feet from clothes, paper, curtains and furniture and other items. Unplug heaters. Do not overload electrical outlets. Do not run extension cords under carpet and furniture. Do not smoke in bed.

Keep matches and lighters away from children. Charcoal grill tips Charcoal produces carbon monoxide when it is burned. The gas is colorless and odorless and can accumulate to toxic levels in closed environments. Each year about 17 people die because of fumes from charcoal being burned inside. To reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning: Never burn charcoal inside homes, tents or campers.

Charcoal should never be used indoors. Because charcoal produces carbon monoxide until extinguished, do not store the grill indoors with freshly used coals. Personal safety in the workplace Lock your car in the parking lot. Report broken lights in stairwells, hallways and outside. Insist on identification from repair persons.

Check the identification of any strangers. Know fire exits. Keep your purse with you or locked in a cabinet, drawer or closet.
